The South Mayo Family Research Centre is one of the two genealogy centres serving County Mayo. The county is divided between them, and this centre’s research work covers the southern half. Its premises are on Main Street in Ballinrobe.
What the centre produces is an individually researched Family History Report, put together by its own research team. It holds Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist church registers, civil records of births, marriages and deaths, gravestone inscriptions, estate records, school records, tithe and valuation records, census returns and census substitutes, and records of migration and emigration. It is a member of the Irish Family History Foundation.
Work runs in two stages. A €95 assessment fee applies first; if relevant records are found, the centre then quotes the price for preparing the Family History Report based on the research available. Where no records are found, it states that it offers professional advice and suggestions instead. Any records found during an assessment are supplied inside the Family History Report rather than on their own.
